According to officials, the plan was being referred to by the alleged terrorists as a follow-up to 9-11. Katherine Curtis has been following this developing story and joins us now with the latest. What_s going on Kat?Vic, the suspects were apparently calling it 9-11 TWO, and it was supposedly set to occur on the 7th anniversary of al Qaeda_s last attack inside Jordan. Officials say that 11 suspects were taking part, all Jordanian citizens who were moving in and out of Syria. Jordan_s intelligence suggests that targets included the US Embassy, shopping centers, and other areas populated by foreign nationals. They suggest that the shopping center attacks were designed to attract attention away from other, more prominent target buildings. Vic, the group reportedly planned on using a variety of weapons, including car bombs and submachine guns. Kat has it been confirmed that these would-be attackers are part of al-Qaeda?Too soon to say right now Vic. Intelligence officials aren_t technically labeling them as al-Qaeda. However, they DO say the suspects are, quote, associated with the ideology of al Qaeda.A very carefully worded statement. Thanks Kat. I trust you_ll keep us up to speed on any developments there.Elsewhere in the Middle East, thousands of mourners gathered in Beirut (bay-ROOT) to pay their respects to slain intelligence official Wassam al-Hassan. He was responsible for uncovering an alleged Syrian bomb conspiracy 2 months ago. It_s believed that he was the primary target in a car bombing that killed him and 7 others and injured scores more. Lebanese politicians are accusing the brutal Syrian leadership of being behind the assassination. The opposition party is also calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who has ties to Syrian allies. Reports have surfaced suggesting that the US could be setting up one-on-one talks with Iran over their nuclear program. However, the White House is strenuously denying these rumors. Natasha Olenski joins us now with the latest. What are you hearing Nat? It depends on who you believe, Vic. The New York Times is reporting that Washington has approached Iran about having bi-lateral talks regarding their nuclear ambitions. The report quotes anonymous officials as saying that Iran was receptive to the idea, but only after America_s presidential election in November. However, American officials say that_s not the case. The White House says that they would be more than happy to meet, but that nothing was on the table as of yet. The US and many other countries contend that Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons - charges that Tehran has repeatedly denied, back to you Vic.Thanks very much Nat. What were your overall impressions of Obama_s speech, Isabella?Agree or disagree with his politics, Peyton, there_s no denying the President delivered one of the most powerful and inspiring performances of his political careerPresident Obama_s hour-long address to Congress outlined his new agenda for the nation, and the overarching message was this: it is time to turn the page. Despite touching on a number of divisive issues that will be hotly debated in the months ahead, Obama_s address was overwhelmingly positive.The President then moved on to what is arguably the most controversial topic in Washington today: the economy. He laid out his plan to close loopholes and raise tax rates for the super rich in order to help boost the country_s struggling middle class. When it came to foreign policy, Obama warned Congress against approving any sanctions against Iran, warning it would derail the progress already made during nuclear talks with the West. He also pointed to Russia_s struggling economy as a sign that diplomatic isolation could be just as effective as waging war. And as he made clear in mid-December, the President believes it_s time for a new direction in the country_s relationship with Cuba. Obama made it clear to Congress that he was willing to work with Republicans to find solutions both parties could agree on. However towards the end of his address, he threw in an off-the-cuff joke that probably didn_t sit well with the GOP. Meanwhile, it was left to Iowa senator Joni Ernst to deliver the official Republican response to the President_s address. Ernst touted a new jobs proposal related to the Keystone pipeline, and called Obamacare a failed policy that reflected Washington_s stale mindset. One thing is for certain: with Republicans dominating both the House and Senate, the President will likely have a tough time passing legislation they disagree with.
