Just 25 years ago there were about a million elephants in Africa. Today that number has fallen to 350-thousand. In addition to barring trade within its borders China is pledging to crack down on illegal processing sites and crime syndicates that funnel money to poachers. 2017_s off to a great start for workers in France On Sunday the French government kicked off the new year by enacting a law that bans employees from having to respond to work-related emails outside of work hours Legislators are calling it the right to disconnect. The goal is to prevent employee burnout. French officials cited studies showing that workers who checked their email throughout the day had higher stress levels than those who did not. Workers in France already had it pretty good - the country is home to a famously short 35-hour work week And if that doesn_t make you want to move to France maybe you_d prefer Finland. The country_s government has started a radical new experiment. It_s giving 2-thousand citizens a GUARANTEED income. They_ll get 587 dollars a month regardless of income wealth or employment status. He had quite the night - going 3 for 3.RW) Eila Adams was watching, and joins us now in the newsroom with the latest.EA) Thanks ladies, it was a clean sweep for Mitt Romney He won all three primaries held Tuesday night: Maryland, Wisconsin, and the District of Columbia.The victories give Romney more than half of the delegates he needs to clinch the Republican nomination for president. Just as important, it widened the gap between him and his GOP rivals. But his closest competitor, Rick Santorum, said he had no intention of backing down. He_s going to push hard to narrow the gap in the 5 primaries being held on April 24th, including his important home state of Pennsylvania.In other news, parts of Texas are reeling after several huge tornadoes touched down in the Dallas area. According to the National Weather Service, between 6 and 13 twisters hit, destroying hundreds of homes and vehicles. One twister was so powerful that it picked up tractor-trailers and threw them around like toys. Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport after the extreme weather damaged over a hundred planes. Amazingly, no fatalities have been reported. The recently-freed Columbian hostages have opened up about the ordeal they lived through for over 10 years. The 6 police officers and 4 soldiers say the Farc rebels had them in chains for years - often chained to each other. Two of the hostages managed to escape into the jungle, but after a month of wandering around lost they were recaptured. Doctors have examined the hostages and say that they are all in relatively good health. It_s unknown how many hostages that guerillas still hold, but it_s believed to be at least 100. A federal jury in Texas found the company guilty of infringing three patents with its iTunes software. As a result Apple has been ordered to pay nearly 533 million dollars to patent licensing firm Smartflash LLC. In a statement following the decision Apple said it intends to appeal the ruling.And a Washington DC law legalizing marijuana was put into effect on Thursday - despite a lack of approval from congressional Republicans. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser had been warned by two House Republicans that implementing the marijuana bill would break federal law. At a press conference on Wednesday Bowser urged Congress not to overturn a bill that 7 in 10 Washington voters were in favor of. Kat The Panama Papers consist of more than 11 MILLION documents from the 1970 to this year taken from the files of Panama-based law firm Mossack Fonseca. The data purports to show how dozens of world leaders and other members of the international elite conspired to launder money and avoid paying taxes The papers were passed to a German newspaper a year ago and then shared with 107 different media groups across the world. Some of the famous names appearing in the leaked documents: Icelandic Prime Minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson. Critics are calling for his resignation after it was revealed that he failed to declare millions of dollars of investments he held in an offshore account. Argentina_s President reportedly also failed to disclose millions in foreign-held accounts and companies as did Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. This is especially embarrassing as Mr Poroshenko had vowed to eliminate such corruption in Ukrainian politics. Russian President Vladimir Putin is not specifically listed but several members of his inner circle ARE and have been linked to a BILLION dollar money laundering scheme. In a huge blow for British Prime Minister David Cameron who has previously promised to get tough on tax evasion investments made by his FATHER are detailed as are several other senior members of the Conservative party. Representatives from Mossack Fonseca have so far denied any allegations of wrongdoing. Kat just to note: using offshore companies is not illegal.
