That_s how the daughter of Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt is describing her recent visit to North Korea with her father. On her blog Sophie Schmidt says her group had to leave their cellphones and laptops behind. Most of the events they attended felt staged and they had to be careful about what they said because everything was bugged. Google Sophie in North Korea to read more on her blog.Subway has responded to viral criticism that their famous footlong sandwiches aren_t actually 12 inches. The company says the term is a trademark and descriptive name not a measurement of length. LAME An Australian started the controversy after posting a photo of his 11-inch sub on Subway_s Facebook page. And a married Utah woman is lucky to be alive after a giant boulder rolled down a nearby ridge and crashed through her house. 63-year old Wanda Danhalter was in bed when the massive rock slammed into her bedroom in the middle of the night. She suffered serious injuries but was able to call 911. LC) Pretty scary stuff ladies.ES) That_s INSANE RS) That_s not a boulder that_s a MOUNTAIN. Welcome to Naked News I_m Victoria Sinclair. Our coverage today begins in the US with the latest on the deadly Meningitis outbreak that_s affected 105 people across the country. According to the Centers for Disease Control eight are dead and ninety-seven are sick but thousands more could be affected. The outbreak has been linked to tainted steroid shots used to treat back pain that were produced at a medical center in Massachusetts. Nationwide up to 13-thousand people may have been exposed to the disease. But because the incubation period takes up to a month it will be weeks before patients know if they_ve been infected. We_ll turn our attention further south now where Mexican authorities say they MAY have scored one of their biggest victories in the war on drugs to date. There is strong evidence to suggest that Mexican marines have killed the leader of one of the country_s most brutal drug cartels. Erica Stevens joins us now with the full story.Vic it_s believed that Heriberto The Executioner Lazcano was killed Sunday in a firefight with marines in northern Mexico. Lazcano is the leader of the powerful Zetas drug cartel which has a reputation for extreme violence. Lazcano is one of Mexico_s most wanted criminals and the US government had even placed a 5 million dollar bounty on his head. Lazcano is a former soldier and although initial forensic tests indicate that authorities have their man further results will be needed for confirmation. Sounds like one pretty tough customer. And certainly a feat President Felipe Calderon can hang his hat on if it_s confirmed.Oh absolutely. It would be Calderon_s biggest victory since he started the military assault on drug cartels six years ago. We_ll just have to wait and see. Now I know you_ve ALSO been keeping an eye on another story for us - the announcement of two of this year_s Nobel Prize winners.That I have Vic the prize for physics is being shared by an American and a Frenchman. The pair have been awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for their ground-breaking quantum optics work which deals with basic units of light and matter. David Wineland and Serge Haroche will split the 1-point-2 million dollar top prize. It_s believed their work could have a huge impact on light-based clocks and desktop computing. The Nobel prizes for literature chemistry and peace will be announced later this week Vic back to you.Thank you Erica and that_s your first look at today_s NAKED news. There_s been a rather shocking announcement from this yearis World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland. The Green Growth Action Alliance which was established at last yearis forum told political and business leaders that a whopping 14 TRILLION dollars must be spent on clean energy to prevent global warming from devastating the world economy.VS) Eila that_s quite the number and i_m sure it surprised everyone at the forum.EA) That it did Vic and it came from quite the powerful source.Heading the alliance is former Mexican President Felipe Calderon and heis not mincing words on the subject. Calderon says to prevent global warming from reaching its tipping point the international community must take massive and immediate action. His recommendations focus on weaning off fossil fuels and shifting all industry to low-carbon technology.And yes this comes with a serious price tag: an estimated 700 billion dollars a year between now and 2030. That said Calderon is adamant that IN-action will cost our planet far more in the long run since it would ravage both the environment AND the world economy. EA) One thing_s for sure Vic itis definitely a BOLD initiativeVS) Was there any sense where all that money would come from?EA) Well according to Alliance members it would take a combination of public money and private investments to get the job done. But they firmly believe the goal can be reached if key members of the G20 get on board.VS) One thing_s for sure Eila SOMETHING needs to happen so we_ll see if any of these recommendations stick. Thanks for the update.VS) Now here_s Laura Connor with more news making headlines today.LC) Vic the Pentagon has cleared the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan from any wrongdoing in his link to the David Petraeus sex scandal. Sources say the Defense Departmentis investigation has concluded that General John Allen did not act inappropriately during his extensive e-mail communications with socialite Jill Kelley. The votes have been tallied in the Israeli general election and despite losing a number of seats Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuis Likud-Beitenu coalition will remain in power. Meanwhile the ultra-nationalist Jewish Home party made significant gains running on a platform that would deny Palestinian independence. North Korea is defiant in the face of a UN Security Council resolution condemning their successful December rocket launch. The rogue state says it plans to continue to strengthen its nuclear program. The UN resolution was passed unanimously by the Security Council and promises significant action in the event of another rocket test. VS) Thanks Laura. A 16-hour siege in Australia_s largest city has ended in dramatic fashion. Early Tuesday morning heavily armed police stormed the Lindt Cafe in Sydney_s busy financial district using flashbangs and smoke grenades to enter the shop where 11 hostages were being held. Gunfire and explosions were heard as an Australian SWAT unit fought their way inside. Early reports indicate that two people - one hostage and the gunman - were killed. A handful of others were injured. The gunman is believed to be an Iranian man who received political asylum in Australia in 1996. 49-year-old Man Haron Monis - a self-proclaimed sheikh - took the hostages on Monday just before 10 AM local time. He was out on bail while facing a number of charges including sexual assault. Haron Monis had a long history of politically-motivated crimes on his record. Authorities believe he was acting alone. In Japan the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has won a two-thirds majority in a referendum vote. Abe_s Liberal Democratic Party had called the snap election to delay a scheduled tax increase and to gain support for his economic reform policies popularly known as Abenomics. Abe took office in 2012 and pledged to revive the nation_s struggling economy. His strategy of raising public spending and printing money provided an initial burst of growth but Japan slipped back into recession in the second half of 2014. After winning the vote Abe said his government would not become complacent and that his Abenomics policies are still only halfway done. And Oil prices have fallen forty-percent this year hitting a five-year low - and they COULD fall even FURTHER. Over the weekend an OPEC member from the UAE says the cartel won_t cut oil production even if prices dip to forty dollars per barrel That kind of sentiment doesn_t bode to well for the short term price which is trading in the 60 dollars per barrel range. So how does that translate to prices at the pump? In some parts of the US gas is selling for under 2 dollars a gallon. Merry Christmas
