There_s been a rather shocking announcement from this yearis World Economic Forum in Davos Switzerland. The Green Growth Action Alliance which was established at last yearis forum told political and business leaders that a whopping 14 TRILLION dollars must be spent on clean energy to prevent global warming from devastating the world economy.VS) Eila that_s quite the number and i_m sure it surprised everyone at the forum.EA) That it did Vic and it came from quite the powerful source.Heading the alliance is former Mexican President Felipe Calderon and heis not mincing words on the subject. Calderon says to prevent global warming from reaching its tipping point the international community must take massive and immediate action. His recommendations focus on weaning off fossil fuels and shifting all industry to low-carbon technology.And yes this comes with a serious price tag: an estimated 700 billion dollars a year between now and 2030. That said Calderon is adamant that IN-action will cost our planet far more in the long run since it would ravage both the environment AND the world economy. EA) One thing_s for sure Vic itis definitely a BOLD initiativeVS) Was there any sense where all that money would come from?EA) Well according to Alliance members it would take a combination of public money and private investments to get the job done. The votes have been tallied in the Israeli general election and despite losing a number of seats Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahuis Likud-Beitenu coalition will remain in power. Meanwhile the ultra-nationalist Jewish Home party made significant gains running on a platform that would deny Palestinian independence. North Korea is defiant in the face of a UN Security Council resolution condemning their successful December rocket launch. The rogue state says it plans to continue to strengthen its nuclear program. The UN resolution was passed unanimously by the Security Council and promises significant action in the event of another rocket test. VS) Thanks Laura.
