A mere week and a half ago Mitt Romney was bracing himself to be the inevitable nominee. RW) But then a funny thing happened on the way to South Carolina didn_t it? VS) True - although something tells me Mr. Romney isn_t the one laughing at the moment. Welcome to the newsroom everyone. VS) Mitt Romney lost by double digits in Saturday_s South Carolina primary and the future_s not looking any brighter for him. Newt Gingrich_s last minute surge in the polls paid off and now it looks like that surge has followed him to Florida. An Insider Advantage poll says Gingrich has taken the lead by a full 8 points. Worse still for Romney the same poll says these numbers are part of a larger trend suggesting Republicans are moving toward Gingrich on a national level. Over to the Middle East now where Syria has refused demands from the Arab League for President Bashar al-Assad ba-SHAR al-ah-SAD to relinquish power to his deputy. Meeting in Cairo the League also called for Syrian officials to form a coalition government with the country_s opposition. UN figures say over 5000 people have died in the past 10 months due to crackdowns on protesters. Nonetheless the government in Damascus da-MASS-kus maintains these casualties represent nothing more than terrorists and armed gangs.With divers having uncovered yet another body the death toll for the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster now stands at 13. Meanwhile disgraced captain Francesco Schettino ska-TEE-no has stated on record that _sail-by salutes_ like the one that brought down his ship are regularly requested by management. He also claims this practice is particularly encouraged during local holidays as a way to bolster publicity for the cruise line. Schettino_s comments directly contradict the recent Costa press conference that stated only one _sail by_ has ever been authorized. And that_s your first look at the news we_ll be right back.
