Eila do you REALLY know what fish you_re eating? According to a report by the non-profit Oceana organization, probably not. They tested over twelve hundred fish samples at restaurants and food stores and found that over HALF had been mislabeled Nearly sixty percent of tuna wasn_t actually tuna, and snapper, cod, and trout were also frequently misidentified. Sushi restaurants were by far the worst offenders, with nearly three-quarters of them serving mislabeled fish.New York City could become the first in the US to require a SALT warning on restaurant menus. The proposal would require the warning appear next to any menu items that contain more than a teaspoon of salt. That_s the maximum recommended daily amount of sodium. It_s estimated that about ten percent of fast-food menu items would require the label. Excess salt is believed to contribute to heart attacks and strokes.Add General Mills cereals to the list of foods turning away from artificial flavors and colors. The company announced a target of ninety percent of its cereals being free of artificial ingredients by the end of 2016. Among the first to change will be Trix, which will also lose two colors of pieces, as the company couldn_t duplicate the blue and green. It_s a small price to pay, though, as more and more consumers are choosing foods with natural ingredients.Imagine winning a 20 year supply of BACON. It_s possible in Indiana, thanks to the state_s Hoosier Lottery They_re offering two-dollar scratcher cards - which are bacon-SCENTED - with cash prizes up to ten thousand bucks. But there are also five chances for 20 years worth of bacon - paid out in installments, fortunately. The webpage for the lottery is also bacon-centric, with quizzes, recipes, tips, bacon sampling events, and a bacon-cam.And finally, Coca Cola is getting a REVOLUTIONARY new BOTTLE. The PlantBottle is a special plastic made ENTIRELY of renewable plant materials, mainly sugarcane and its manufacturing byproducts. That_s a big change from the usual petroleum-based plastics. The new bottles have a substantially smaller eco-footprint, and are also fully recyclable. The PlantBottles are going to be rolled out over the next few years, across all of Coca-Cola_s beverage brands.
