I went back and used a clean, different, browser. There is nothing in the cart. I add to the cart, it shows 1 in the cart. On either check out or continue shopping, the item in the cart disappears.
Since I really don't want to have multiple "wallets", I guess I'm out of options. (I did look at just using a card, but there were WAY too many handoffs and everyone was collecting too much information.)
