YET AGAIN, I logged on to find people forwarding and reposting all sorts of completely bogus stuffOh, like Facebook is going to charge you money to keep your profile private unless you forward this message?Exactly - and it drives me crazy. It_s 2015. I can_t believe people haven_t learned not to take everything at face value. Hey listen, I have friends who still get outraged at articles from The OnionUnbelievable right? And it keeps on happening. Here_s the latest Welcome, everyone. It_s time to present our Boob of the Week. Today, it isnt a single person. Its EVERY person who posted the latest legal-sounding declaration to Facebook. I bet you saw it. Pursuant to these articles of the code of intellectual property, I declare that my rights are attached to all my personal data, drawings, paintings, photos, video, texts, etcetera published to my profile and page. Yadda yadda yadda violation of my privacy is punishable by law and the Rome Statute yadda yadda yadda.Thats all nifty and self-righteous, but anyone with a brain SHOULD know that its not worth the control-V it took to paste it. Facebooks terms and conditions-which were accepted by anyone who signs up to the site-supersede anything quasi-official sounding you post. The ONLY way to keep your photos, videos, and musings on politics and relationships completely private is to NOT POST THEM TO FACEBOOK. Id be much less frustrated about this if it wasnt for the fact that this EXACT SAME thing has been popping up on Facebook three times a year, for YEARS. Its been debunked over and over. And its not just this one. Theres Share this and Bill Gates will send you a hundred dollars. Fake. And All private messages will be made public to promote honesty. Fake. Oh, and EVERYTHING on The Onion is fake. And the fact I have to SAY that makes me want to scream. Its not like this phenomenon is NEW, either. Remember all those emails your great-aunt sent you about AIDS-infected needles in payphones and Nostradamus predicting the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster? ALL BULLCRAP The basic rule EVERYONE should follow is to NEVER forward or copy-paste something without fact-checking it first. Remember, as Abraham Lincoln said way back in 1868, you cant believe everything you read on the internet. Anyone who believes THAT, or fell for the Facebook spiel AGAIN, is our BOOB of the WEEK.
