Greetings one and all I_m your host Peyton Priestly Happy to have you with us. Today_s program begins with US President Barack Obama_s State of the Union address on Tuesday night. It was an historic event - no Democratic President in the last century has addressed a Congress filled with more Republican lawmakers. Isabella Rossini was tracking the night_s events and joins us now with her report. What were your overall impressions of Obama_s speech Isabella?Agree or disagree with his politics Peyton there_s no denying the President delivered one of the most powerful and inspiring performances of his political careerPresident Obama_s hour-long address to Congress outlined his new agenda for the nation and the overarching message was this: it is time to turn the page. Despite touching on a number of divisive issues that will be hotly debated in the months ahead Obama_s address was overwhelmingly positive.The President then moved on to what is arguably the most controversial topic in Washington today: the economy. He laid out his plan to close loopholes and raise tax rates for the super rich in order to help boost the country_s struggling middle class. When it came to foreign policy Obama warned Congress against approving any sanctions against Iran warning it would derail the progress already made during nuclear talks with the West. He also pointed to Russia_s struggling economy as a sign that diplomatic isolation could be just as effective as waging war. And as he made clear in mid-December the President believes it_s time for a new direction in the country_s relationship with Cuba. Obama made it clear to Congress that he was willing to work with Republicans to find solutions both parties could agree on. However towards the end of his address he threw in an off-the-cuff joke that probably didn_t sit well with the GOP. Meanwhile it was left to Iowa senator Joni Ernst to deliver the official Republican response to the President_s address. Ernst touted a new jobs proposal related to the Keystone pipeline and called Obamacare a failed policy that reflected Washington_s stale mindset. One thing is for certain: with Republicans dominating both the House and Senate the President will likely have a tough time passing legislation they disagree with.
