The city of Phoenix was hit with its heaviest single-day rainfall since 1933. According to the National Weather Service more than six inches of rain in under 24 hours In the city and its surrounding neighborhoods roads were flooded and schools were closed along with other official buildings including the Arizona House of Representatives. Conditions were especially bad in western Phoenix where some cars were left completely submerged on the highway. The historic rains have prompted governor Jan Brewer to declare a state of emergency with non-essential state employees being asked to stay home. The downpours are a byproduct of Tropical Storm Norbert which has now been downgraded to a tropical depression. Despite the downgrade Isabella the harsh weather could continue for the next couple days.The White House has strongly condemned violence against women in the wake of a newly released video showing NFL player Ray Rice punching his fiancee in an elevator. A spokesman for the administration said President Obama believes that violence against women is something that needs to be aggressively combated. But new footage showing what went on INSIDE the elevator has resulted in his indefinite ban from pro football.
