Welcome to naked news. Escalating violence between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has sparked fears of an outbreak of full-scale war. On Wednesday three Israelis were killed when a rocket fired from Gaza hit a four-storey residential building. Israel has responded with a vicious assault on 100 suspected rocket launch sites in Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sounded alarm bells by acknowledging that an Israeli ground offensive is an option if necessary. The UN Security Council held an emergency session late Wednesday where officials called for maximum restraint. Over to Asia now where China_s government has finally made its long-awaited transition of power. Xi Jinping is now officially the face of Chinese leadership. Peyton Priestly joins us with the story. Vic after a decade of unprecedented economic growth Chinese President Hu Jintao (WHO jin-TOW) handed the torch to Xi Jinping (SHE JIN PING) as the new head of the Chinese Communist Party. Following a ceremony in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Mr. Xi and the six other members of China_s Standing Committee pledged to make China even stronger than it is today. The new leadership will gradually take control over the next few months Vicwith Hu Jintao_s presidency formally ending next March.It_s a very interesting peak into their somewhat secretive regime Peyton. Now I understand that standing Committee you spoke about was cut down from 9 to 7 members. Is there any sort of significance to that? There is actually. For one it should make it easier for the government to reach concensus on important decisions. And unlike China_s last two presidents Xi Jinping will also have control of the military. Many observers are calling it a major consolidation of power.It_s certainly the dawn of a new era and let_s hope it_s for the better. Now you_ve also been tracking a positive development over in Myanmar What_s happening over there? That_s right Vic just days before a historic visit from US President Barack Obama Myanmar_s (me-AHN-mar) government has released 452 prisoners under amnesty as a gesture of good will. The move is a sign of the many democratic reforms taking effect over there since the country_s current administration took office in 2010. Many of those being released were political prisoners or foreign nationals. Myanmar_s adoption of democratic policies has led to the loosening of sanctions from the international community. During his visit President Obama will meet with Myanmar President Thein Sein and activist icon Aung San Suu Kyi. Back to you Vic. Thanks Peyton.
